Sony WF-1000XM3 Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones with Bluetooth

Sony WF-1000XM3 Headphones
There is a huge choice of wireless headphones out there these days. Sony's WF-1000XM3 is at the premium end of this spectrum of choice and from the moment you unbox these headphones, you can feel the exceptional quality.
Sound quality is excellent. It's a quality sound with very good noise cancelling.
The bass is solid and the mid range equally strong. There is a depth and separation to the sound that means you can clearly identify individual instruments.
For hours I would put these in, click the noise cancelling on and disappear in to my own little world, bathed in deep, rich sounds. Very pleasant.
Setting the WF-1000XM3 headphones up is simple enough. To get the best out of them, you should download the accompanying app on your smartphone and connect the headphones through the app. This gives you an array of features and adjustability of those features.
Everything from ambient noise settings to sound settings to the function of the touch sensitive pads on the headphones and much more.
Through the app you can update firmware too. While we had ours, we received a firmware update that added a touch volume control option to the headphones.
The design of the case and headphones themselves is elegant and classic. The case isn't small but offers great battery life.
Sony’s charging case has a magnetic lid and the headphones themselves are held magnetically to the interior, seating nicely on the charging pins. The case has a real quality feel to it and is well designed. It charges via a USB-C cable.
The pill-shaped earbuds have three contact points designed to comfortably distribute pressure along the outer ear. There are touch controls on each headphone.
Sony calls this 'SENSE ENGINE™' technology, which enhances your listening experience with a range of smart features.
By default, double-tapping the left unit alternates between noise cancelling and ambient sound modes, a single tap of the right unit pauses play, and a double-tap skips tracks.
You can talk at a touch by placing your finger over the headphone which turns the volume right down and lets in ambient sound. So you can instantly chat with someone without taking your headphones off.
These functions can all be remapped via Sony’s app.
In addition to the touch functions, the headphones have intelligent adaptive sound control which automatically adjusts depending on the environment, for example, travelling, walking, or waiting, the level of ambient sound or noise cancelling adjusts automatically. You can of course customise the settings vis the App.
I used these while I was Sanding the floor in my kitchen. Very noisy.
The noise cancelling was excellent and the talk at a touch function was great for the many interruptions.
In Independent tests, the earbuds managed 4.76 hours of constant playback with noise cancelling on and with a 10 minute quick charge gained 1.5 hours of playback, not bad at all.
It takes 1.5 hours to complete a charge the headphones from completely flat and 3.5 hours to fully charge the case.
A fully charged case with charge the headphones 3 times.
Bluetooth connectivity is excellent with a new chip and has a 10+ metre range, however you can’t connect to more than one device simultaneously.
Hands free calling is ok. The headphones pick up ambient sound so ideally, you need to be somewhere quiet.
All in all, these are excellent. The are a very high quality pair of headphones with excellent sound quality. The app means you will receive regular firmware updates, extending their life.
