Fujifilm GFX 50S Mirrorless Medium Format Camera Review

Fujifilm GFX 50S Mirrorless Medium Format Camera Review
The Fujifilm GFX 50S is a purists camera for those that truly love still photography. Fujifilm have succeeded in creating a magnificent camera that provides images with exceptional tone, dynamic range, depth and clarity with superb lenses. The images above were taken on the Fujifilm GFX 50S of the interior of the new Bentley Bentayga and processed with Capture One.
A mirrorless (uses a 2.36M dot touchscreen or detachable 3.69M dot screen view finder rather direct view via mirror) 43.8x32.9mm 51.4 MP CMOS medium format sensor camera. The electronic viewfinder is so good, you’ll forget it’s an EVF at all. The CMOS sensor is 70% larger than full-frame so you get lower noise and smoother tonal ranges.  The body is surprisingly compact, but large enough to be a proper instrument, you need a certain size and weight for stability and the right grip. It has a sensor cleaning system that operates every time you shut it off and a top shutter speed of 1/4000 with flash sync at 1/125.
The rear screen folds out so you can use it as a waist finder, or straight out and even up, so you can raise the camera high and still follow the action. The rear touchscreen is so easy to use, zoom in with two fingers and navigate through the controls with ease. Pick your focus point with a tiny joystick on the back and change settings very fast. Waist level quickly becomes a very natural way to shoot, especially with the focus tracking on. The on camera knobs are obvious, no instructions necessary, alter everything there, plus the ubiquitous exposure compensation button.
Fujiilm's use of their own digital film styles that imitate previous celluloid stock are a huge draw for this camera. Just pick a film style and shoot. Purist Cartier Bresson always aimed to capture images as he saw them, with little or no changes after. Of course you can always change your mind after and apply different settings if needed, and the detail captured in the raw files is exceptional. Highlights and lowlights can be recovered far more than with almost any other camera system.
Video quality is excellent too, however it is really excels as a stills camera, though this may change if they improve the video focus tracking and add 4K. Shoot a love story or art movie, but actions scenes may be a challenge.
The lenses are a major reason to invest in this system. Wonderful, huge pieces of glass that have zero distortion and translate what you see faithfully to the sensor.  I shot mostly with the Fujifilm GF 32-64mm F4, all you really need for portrait and fashion. The depth of field, resolution and clarity are gorgeous. Everything from still life to landscapes are imbued with vibrant colour and richness. Depth of field on the 110mm f2 and 63mm f2.8 are also jaw dropping, shoot wide open for beautiful softness and bokeh in the background. The 23mm f4 is a fantastic landscape lens, keeping all the detail with no curved lines and divine colour depth.
It's definitely worth investing in the Fujifilm EF-X500 Shoe Mount Flash as it actually manages to provide a soft lighting effect without blowing the subject out. It automatically pairs with the camera so it can easily alter the settings to just fill in the shadows or drop out the background if you so wish.
This is a brilliant and artistically inspiring camera which at this price really has no rivals in terms of sheer quality. Whatever you read elsewhere there are no full frame 35mm cameras that compare, when you take into account the mix of capture detail, high quality lenses, build quality and sheer richness of the images. It really isn’t all about the number of pixels folks! If you grew up on medium format film cameras as I did, then this camera should bring a tear to the eye as digital finally catches up to celluloid at a reasonable price point.
Pre digital photographers saved up for the best medium format film camera body they could buy and stuck with it. Now we are caught in an endless cycle of buying the next latest thing, with more pixels, more dynamic range etc, all essentially because digital was never quite as good as film. With this camera you never need worry about updating again, but keep and take amazing pictures for life. Quality such as this will never be outdated.
The Fujifilm GFX 50S is for professionals and those that simply want the most affordable medium format camera to take unbelievable shots to impress friends, family and colleagues that you simply could not achieve with a 35mm. Ideal for studio, landscape, travel, portraiture and fashion.
